"I am writing as the Chair of the North Hills Landscape Committee to provide a letter if reference supporting landscape contractor/designer Chris Hecht.  I worked with Chris in 2000 and 2001 in helping to work with a coalition of public and private partners that developed the Gateway Garden and Gateway Emergency Preparedness Center, which is one of Oakland’s newest and most impressive parks and public gardens.  Chris did a great job of overseeing the design and development of the Gateway Garden, which includes several hundred tons of granite boulders that Chris placed made aesthetically into benches, tables and a sundial sculpture area, planting of thousand of plants, and scenic trails that wander through the attractive public garden.

I was also impressed with the design skills that Chris and his firm offered.  Chris and plant designer Wendy Wilde quickly developed design plans and helped lay out plans for the planting in the Gateway Garden.  They were also very successful in helping us acquire plant materials for the Gateway Garden at a very reasonable cost.

When it comes to working with boulders, Chris was amazing and has done great work in the Gateway Garden and his work at Hillcrest Elementary School here in Oakland.  Chris developed a remarkable amphitheater area or outdoor classroom area at Hillcrest School transforming a site with remarkable rock placements.
